Benefits You May Be Eligible for with a Visual Impairment

Visual impairment and blindness can affect independence, safety, and the ability to carry out daily tasks. There are several UK benefits and entitlements that people with sight loss may be eligible for, including some that provide automatic eligibility for certain benefit components.

How Visual Impairment May Affect Benefit Eligibility

Visual impairment can affect benefit eligibility through difficulty reading, managing correspondence and bills, safety risks (navigating obstacles, crossing roads), difficulty cooking, cleaning, and carrying out daily tasks, social isolation, and the need for assistance when travelling. If you are registered as severely sight impaired (blind), you may automatically qualify for certain benefit components.

PIP and Visual Impairment

PIP may be available if visual impairment affects your daily living or mobility. If you are registered as severely sight impaired (blind), you could automatically qualify for the PIP enhanced mobility component. Other relevant activities include reading and understanding signs, managing correspondence, preparing food safely, washing and dressing, and planning and following journeys. Describe how visual impairment affects each activity, including any aids you use.

Additional Entitlements

People registered as sight impaired or severely sight impaired may be entitled to a Blind Person's Allowance (a tax-free extra personal allowance), a 50% reduction in the cost of a TV licence, free NHS sight tests and help with the cost of glasses, local authority support and equipment (magnifiers, talking devices), and a Blue Badge. These entitlements are separate from benefits like PIP and can often be claimed alongside them.

Other Support

Depending on your circumstances, you may also be eligible for Attendance Allowance (if over State Pension age), ESA or Universal Credit, Pension Credit, and Council Tax Reduction. Organisations such as the RNIB can provide additional information and support with benefit claims for people with visual impairment.

Based on how visual impairment may affect daily life, the following benefits could be relevant to your situation. Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances.
