Pension Credit

Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit that tops up your weekly income if you are over State Pension age (currently 66) and your income is below a certain level. It is one of the most underclaimed benefits in the UK — an estimated 850,000 eligible households do not claim it, missing out on an average of £3,900 per year. The Department for Work and Pensions actively encourages people to check their eligibility.

Pension Credit comes in two parts. Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income to a minimum level — currently £218.15 for single people and £332.95 for couples. If your income (including State Pension, private pensions, and most other income) is below this level, the difference is paid to you. Savings Credit is an extra payment for people who have saved some money towards their retirement, such as a private pension. It is worth up to £17.01 per week for single people or £19.04 for couples.

Savings do not automatically disqualify you. For every £500 of savings above £10,000, just £1 per week is added to your assessed income. This means someone with £20,000 in savings would have only £20 per week added to their income — they could still qualify. Additional amounts can be added if you have a severe disability, are a carer, have housing costs, or are responsible for a child.

Pension Credit is widely known as a "gateway benefit" because even receiving a small weekly amount can unlock substantial additional support. Pension Credit Guarantee Credit can qualify you for: full Council Tax Reduction (potentially saving over £1,000/year), Warm Home Discount (£150/year off electricity), free NHS dental treatment and sight tests, Cold Weather Payments (£25 for each 7-day period of very cold weather), free TV licence if aged 75 or over, and full Housing Benefit. You can backdate your claim by up to 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who may be eligible for Pension Credit?
People over State Pension age (currently 66) whose weekly income is below the Pension Credit threshold. For single people, the threshold is approximately £218.15/week. For couples, it is approximately £332.95/week. Your income includes State Pension, private pensions, earnings, and most other income. If you have a partner below State Pension age, you usually need to claim Universal Credit instead, unless you were already receiving Pension Credit before 15 May 2019.
What other benefits could Pension Credit unlock?
Pension Credit Guarantee Credit can unlock: full Council Tax Reduction (saving over £1,000/year), Warm Home Discount (£150/year off electricity), free NHS dental treatment and sight tests, free TV licence if aged 75+, Cold Weather Payments (£25 per cold spell), full Housing Benefit if you rent, and help with funeral costs through the Funeral Expenses Payment. The total value of these additional benefits often far exceeds the Pension Credit payment itself.
Can I backdate my Pension Credit claim?
Yes. You can backdate your claim by up to 3 months. If you were eligible during the backdated period, you could receive a lump sum payment covering those 3 months. There is no need to provide a reason for the backdating — it is automatic.
Do my savings disqualify me from Pension Credit?
Not automatically. For Guarantee Credit, savings up to £10,000 are ignored entirely. For every £500 above £10,000, only £1 per week is added to your assessed income. So someone with £20,000 in savings has just £20/week added. The calculation is more complex than many people expect, which is why it is always worth checking.
How do I apply for Pension Credit?
You can apply by calling the Pension Credit claim line on 0800 99 1234 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm) or online at GOV.UK. You will need your National Insurance number, details of your income (State Pension, private pensions), savings, and housing costs. Processing typically takes 4 to 6 weeks. Always ask to backdate your claim by the full 3 months.
Will my private pension stop me getting Pension Credit?
Not necessarily. Private pension income is counted towards the income threshold, but many people with private pensions still qualify — particularly if they also receive additional amounts for disability, caring responsibilities, or housing costs. The only way to know for certain is to check.
