Benefits You May Be Eligible for with Mobility Difficulties

Mobility difficulties can arise from many different conditions — arthritis, injuries, neurological conditions, amputations, and more. If you find it difficult to walk, climb stairs, or get around independently, there are several UK benefits and entitlements that could help.

How Mobility Difficulties May Affect Benefit Eligibility

Mobility difficulties can affect benefit eligibility through limited walking distance, use of a wheelchair or mobility aid, difficulty with stairs and steps, risk of falls, need for assistance when travelling, and difficulty accessing public transport. The DWP assesses how far you can walk reliably, repeatedly, and safely — not just the maximum distance you could manage on a good day.

PIP Mobility Component

The PIP mobility component has two rates: standard (£28.70/week) for people who have difficulty planning or following a journey, and enhanced (£73.90/week) for people who cannot walk more than 20 metres or need a wheelchair most of the time. When describing your mobility, include how far you can walk before needing to stop, how long it takes, how much pain or discomfort it causes, and whether you use mobility aids. Describe your worst days.

Blue Badge and Motability

If you receive the PIP enhanced mobility component, you could automatically qualify for a Blue Badge for parking and the Motability scheme, which can help you lease a car, powered wheelchair, or scooter. Even without PIP, you may be able to apply for a Blue Badge directly through your local council based on your walking ability.

Housing and Other Support

If mobility difficulties mean your current home is unsuitable, you may be able to get help through a Disabled Facilities Grant from your local council (up to £30,000 for adaptations), Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit, and Discretionary Housing Payments if you need to move to an accessible property. Attendance Allowance (if over State Pension age), Council Tax Reduction, and Pension Credit may also be available.

Benefits You May Be Eligible For

Based on how mobility difficulties may affect daily life, the following benefits could be relevant to your situation. Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I qualify for the PIP enhanced mobility rate?
You may qualify for the PIP enhanced mobility rate if you cannot walk more than 20 metres without severe discomfort, need a wheelchair most of the time, or have a severe visual impairment. Describe your walking ability honestly, focusing on your worst days.
Can I get a Blue Badge without PIP?
Yes. While receiving the PIP enhanced mobility component provides automatic eligibility, you can also apply for a Blue Badge directly through your local council. You may need to attend a walking assessment.
What is the Motability scheme?
The Motability scheme allows people receiving the PIP enhanced mobility component (or War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement) to exchange part of their benefit to lease a car, powered wheelchair, or scooter. Contact Motability for more information on what is available.
