Benefits You May Be Eligible for with a Learning Disability
People with learning disabilities may be entitled to a range of UK benefits to support daily living, independence, and financial security. Whether you are a parent of a child with a learning disability or an adult seeking support, there are several benefits worth checking.
How a Learning Disability May Affect Eligibility
Learning disabilities can affect many aspects of daily life: understanding and processing information, managing money and budgeting, personal care and household tasks, communication, social interaction, safety awareness, and travel and planning journeys. Benefits are assessed on how these difficulties affect daily function — not on IQ scores or diagnostic labels alone.
PIP and DLA for Learning Disabilities
Adults of working age may be eligible for PIP, while children under 16 may be eligible for Disability Living Allowance (DLA). Both benefits consider the level of help, supervision, and prompting needed to carry out daily activities and get around safely. Common areas of difficulty include preparing food, managing medication, communicating, engaging with others, planning journeys, and staying safe. If the person needs someone to prompt, supervise, or help them, this is relevant.
Support for Carers and Families
If you care for someone with a learning disability for 35 or more hours per week, you may be eligible for Carer's Allowance. Parents caring for a child with a learning disability may also find that DLA for the child unlocks additional support, such as a carer premium on benefits or a carer element on Universal Credit. Council Tax discounts may be available if a person with a severe mental impairment lives in the household.
Other Support Available
Depending on circumstances, people with learning disabilities may be eligible for ESA or Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, a Blue Badge, supported living funding through social services, and local authority support. An appointee can manage benefit claims on behalf of someone who finds it difficult to do so themselves.
