Benefits You May Be Eligible for with Cancer

A cancer diagnosis can bring significant financial pressures on top of the health challenges. Treatment side effects, time off work, and additional costs can all take a toll. There are several UK benefits that people with cancer may be entitled to — and some claims can be fast-tracked under special rules.

Special Rules for People with Cancer

If you have cancer and your clinician believes your condition is severe, you may be able to claim under special rules. This fast-tracks your claim, and you would typically receive the highest rate of benefit automatically. Special rules claims are processed much faster — often within a few weeks rather than months. Ask your GP, consultant, or Macmillan nurse whether this applies to your situation.

PIP and Cancer

Even without special rules, you may be eligible for PIP if cancer or its treatment affects your daily living or mobility. Side effects of treatment such as fatigue, nausea, pain, and cognitive changes ("chemo brain") can all affect your ability to carry out daily activities. PIP is not means-tested, so you can claim regardless of your income or savings. You do not need to have stopped working to claim.

Financial Support During Treatment

If cancer treatment means you cannot work or your income has reduced, you may be eligible for ESA, Universal Credit, or Pension Credit. You could also be eligible for free prescriptions, help with travel costs to hospital appointments through the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme, and Council Tax Reduction. Macmillan Cancer Support and other charities can also provide financial grants to help with the costs of living with cancer.

Support for Carers

If someone cares for you for 35 or more hours per week and you receive a qualifying disability benefit, they may be eligible for Carer's Allowance — up to £81.90 per week. This recognises the significant role that family members and friends often play during cancer treatment and recovery.

Benefits You May Be Eligible For

Based on how cancer may affect daily life, the following benefits could be relevant to your situation. Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances.
