Disability & Health Benefits in the UK

If you have a health condition or disability that affects your daily life, you may be entitled to financial support. UK disability benefits are designed to help cover the extra costs of living with a long-term condition. Most disability benefits are not means-tested, which means your income and savings typically do not affect your eligibility. The amount you could receive depends on how your condition affects you, not on what condition you have. Whether you have a physical condition, mental health condition, sensory impairment, or learning difficulty, there may be support available to you. You do not need to be out of work to claim many of these benefits — for example, PIP can be claimed whether or not you are employed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are disability benefits means-tested in the UK?
Most disability benefits — including PIP, Attendance Allowance, DLA, and Industrial Injuries Benefit — are not means-tested. This means your income, savings, and employment status do not typically affect your eligibility. However, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) has both contribution-based and income-related forms, with the income-related form being means-tested. Universal Credit, which can include a disability element, is also means-tested.
Can I claim more than one disability benefit at the same time?
In some cases, you may be able to receive more than one disability benefit. For example, you could potentially receive PIP alongside ESA or Universal Credit. However, some benefits overlap and cannot be paid together — for instance, you generally cannot receive both PIP and Attendance Allowance, or both PIP and DLA. Receiving a disability benefit may also make you eligible for additional support such as Council Tax Reduction or a Blue Badge.
How do I apply for disability benefits?
The application process varies by benefit. PIP claims typically start with a phone call to the DWP, followed by a detailed form and often an assessment. Attendance Allowance requires a claim form. ESA can be claimed online or by phone. Benefits Robin can help guide you through the process and assist with completing forms, but the DWP makes all final decisions on eligibility and awards.
What if my disability benefit claim is turned down?
If your application is not successful, you have the right to ask for a Mandatory Reconsideration within one month of the decision. If you disagree with the reconsideration outcome, you can appeal to an independent tribunal. Many decisions are overturned at these stages — around 25% of mandatory reconsiderations and approximately 60% of tribunal appeals result in a changed decision.
