Benefits You May Be Eligible for with Diabetes
Diabetes can affect many aspects of daily life, from managing blood sugar levels and medication to dealing with complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy, or fatigue. Depending on how diabetes affects you, there are several UK benefits and entitlements you could be eligible for.
How Diabetes May Affect Your Eligibility
Diabetes alone does not automatically qualify you for disability benefits, but if it significantly affects your daily living or mobility — particularly due to complications — you may be eligible. Complications such as diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage), retinopathy (eye problems), kidney disease, foot problems, and severe hypoglycaemic episodes can all affect your ability to carry out daily activities safely and independently.
PIP and Diabetes
You may be eligible for PIP if diabetes or its complications affect your daily living or mobility. Relevant difficulties could include managing your diet and food preparation, monitoring blood sugar levels, managing insulin or other medications, mobility problems due to neuropathy or amputations, and fatigue affecting daily activities. PIP assesses function, not diagnosis — so describe specifically how diabetes affects your ability to carry out each activity on your worst days.
Free Prescriptions
If you have diabetes and take insulin or other medication, you are typically entitled to free prescriptions through a medical exemption certificate. This applies to all your prescriptions, not just diabetes-related ones. You can apply for a medical exemption certificate through your GP or diabetes specialist.
Other Support You Could Receive
Depending on your circumstances, you may also be eligible for Attendance Allowance (if over State Pension age), ESA if diabetes affects your ability to work, Universal Credit for income support, Pension Credit, and a Blue Badge if you have mobility difficulties due to complications such as neuropathy or amputation.
